This catalogue reveals the great breadth of paintings in public ownership in Norfolk. The largest collection is that of Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery with some 1,200 works. Among these is an unrivalled holding of paintings by the Norwich School of artists together with a fine collection of Dutch and Flemish masters. Modern painting is also well represented through the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts while smaller collections offer works by lesser known local artists. Over 2,250 paintings from 45 collections are repoduced, providing a significant visual record of the region\'s cultural identity.
